This week we celebrated the Vernal (spring) Equinox, the day during which the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of both day and night are almost exactly the same. This event also marks the season change from winter to spring. This is the perfect time to refresh your space and make sure your home electrical is functioning properly.
Earth experiences two equinoxes per year, one in the spring and one in the fall, in September when the season changes from summer to fall. The spring equinox brings about earlier sunrises, later sunsets and more plant growth. Because earth tilts on an axis, not straight up and down, this is the day when the northern and southern hemispheres trade places in receiving the sun’s light.
There is a long-standing myth that this is the one day a year that you can balance an egg on its end and it will stand up straight. In fact, you can balance an egg on its end any day of the year, as long as you’re working on a level surface and have patience and coordination (and perhaps a good level to make sure the surface you’re working on is actually level).
Given that it is the start of a new season, and since we all have some extended time indoors lately, the equinox is the perfect time for some spring electrical cleaning. Making sure lightbulbs are the correct wattages for their fixtures, replacing worn out extension cords and installing surge protectors are all easy fixes that can assure your home is safe for the season. Additionally, cleaning your electrical appliances and ensuring all the wiring for them is functioning properly is a great idea during this time.
